In a bowl, beat the butter with an electric mixer until light in colour. Gradually add 1/4 cup (60 ml) of the applesauce and the icing sugar, beating until smooth. Transfer the applesauce butter to a container. Set aside.
With the rack in the middle position, preheat the oven to 500°F (250°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
On a work surface, flatten the bread slices with a rolling pin. Remove the crusts, if desired, and place the bread on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes or until toasted.
Spread the applesauce butter onto the toasted bread. Spread with the remaining applesauce. Cover with overlapping apple slices and brush lightly with maple syrup. Bake for 5 to 8 minutes. Let cool.
When ready to serve, dust with icing sugar, if desired.
