In a saucepan, cook the cabbage, garlic, broth and oil on low heat. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally.
Preheat the oven to 180 °C (350 °F).
Toast the bread and rub it with garlic.
In an earthenware pot (preferably), arrange the bread evenly.
Sprinkle the cheese, add the braised cabbage, pour the hot broth and season with pepper.
Bake for about 30 minutes. Serve hot.
